Annual Maine Bike Rally

The 21st Annual Maine Bike Rally will take place in Fryeburg, Maine on July 10-12, 2009. This rally offers three days of road and off-road rides in western Maine and the Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire. Many different types of rides take place of varying lengths for different levels of bike riders. There is plenty of entertainment for all members of the family. The Maine Wildlife Park located in Gray, Maine will host the Maine Woodsmen Day on July 18, 2009. Wood sculptures and carvers will be present making works of art out of blocks of wood. Skolfield Nature Preserve in Brunswick, Maine

Located in Brunswick, Maine the Captain Alfred Skolfield Nature Preserve consists of marsh and mudflats that attract many species of birds. The site used to be a traditional portage site for Native Americans and then later the site of the Skolfield shipbuilding yard.

Popham Beach State Park is located in Brunswick, Maine along the coast. This is a very nice family beach with good sand. The Popham settlement of 1607 and Fort George are located nearby. There are 529 acres, bathhouses, showers, picnic areas, grills, and trails for walking. The city of Bath, Maine is located about 15 miles distance.

Bradbury Mountain State Park, Pownal, Maine

Located in the small country town of Pownal, Maine is a small mountain that offers walking trails that are easy for everyone in the entire family. Bradbury Mountain State Park offers trails for hikers and mountain bikers. This park is located on Route 9 and has a number of campsites available. There is 610 acres of forested land. The park is easy to get to - just five miles from the Freeport-Durham exit 22 of U.S. 295.

The economy is forcing and prompting many of Maine's summer camps to economize and promote energy efficiency. The Maine Youth Camping Foundation is promoting environmentally sound practices at Maine's summer camps. Maine camps are seeing a reduced enrollment this summer; probably due to the poor economy. Mountain Biking at Sunday River, Maine

Bailey Island, Maine

My wife and I will soon be spending a week (last week in June - I will post some pictures) on Bailey Island, Maine in a cottage overlooking the ocean. It has been a long year so we are looking forward to it.

Bailey Island is a small island on the tip of a penisular on the coast of Maine. The island is connected by a land bridge to Orr's Island and then to the mainland. It is part of Harpswell, Maine. The island is very small with a population of about 450 people. Bailey Island is easy to get to. Travel north or south on Route 1 and then go south on Route 24.

In anticipation of the trip I am surfing the net for info on Bailey Island. And if I am looking it up I may as well share it with you! Here are some links:

Ski Museum of Maine

The Ski Museum of Maine will have an Exhibit Opening of "Preserving Theo Johnsen" on Friday, June 12th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The museum is located at 109 Church Street in Farmington, Maine. World's Largest Lobster Roll

There will be an attempt to create the world's largest lobster roll on June 7, 2009 in Portland, Maine. The event is a team effort between Maine's West End Neighborhood Association and Linda Bean's Perfect Maine. They are trying to get a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records by building a 60 foot long lobster roll.

Maine Company Makes Doormats from Discarded Floating Rope

A Waldoboro, Maine company, Custom Cordage Company, is making doormats out of discarded floating rope formerly used by fishermen. Ever since the government prohibited floating rope in fishing activities (they were a danger to whales) there has been lots of excess used floating rope around to be disposed of. Investing in Maine's Hiking Trails

An avid hiker of Maine has wrote an online article entitled "Why Invest in Maine's Trails?", The Exception Magazine, May 5, 2009. He advances the notion that we should invest money, time and effort in building and maintaining hiking trails in Maine. The reasons for doing this include the benefits of health (we get healthier if we get out and exercise), economics (more hiking trails means more tourism dollars), and pride in having good walking trails in our state. The Camden Rotary will be presenting its Summer Concert entitled "Music by the Sea" on Sunday, July 5th, 2009. It will take place at Harbor Park in Camden, Maine and will feature Maine's Own 195th Army National Guard Band and several other bands as well. This is part of the Camden, Maine Festival of Independence.

Trek Across Maine - Biking Event

The Trek Across Maine is sponsored by the Maine Lung Association. This is a multi-day bike riding event. The start is at Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine on June 19, 2009. The finish takes place in Belfast, Maine on June 21, 2009. This bike ride is a 3-day, 180 mile bicycle tour across Maine from the western mountains to the coastline. The tour stops overnight at the University of Maine in Farmington and Colby College in Waterville.
