Maine Lobster Harbor Days

Maine Lobster Harbor Days will be held throughout October and November in 2009. The events are being organized by the Maine Lobster Promotion Council to help support the Maine lobster industry. Most Maine lobster is harvested during the fall so the holding of the event in the fall makes sense to lobstermen. The dates of these events are listed below:

Biking on Acadia's Carriage Roads (Maine)

If you are a biker (bicycles) who enjoys the outdoors then a perfect spot to bike is on the carriage roads of Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. There are forty-five miles of roads in the park. The roads were designed for horse-drawn carriages so they are easily navigable by bikes. Guide to Acadia National Park

There are lots of guide books published for Acadia National Park, but one of the best is available free online from the National Park Service. The online document has the guidebook divided into segments (sections and chapters) that are available in Acrobat Reader (PDF) file format. Most files are under a megabyte so they are easily downloadable. There are chapters on park information, different sections of the park to visit such as Jordan Pond, Sieur de Monts, Isleford Historical Museum, and Acadia's west side. Acadia Night Sky Festival (Sep 17-21, 2009)

To draw attention to and to celebrate the visibility of stars in eastern and northern Maine, officials with the park and on MDI have organized the Acadia Night Sky Festival, which is set to get under way in the park and in Bar Harbor next week. The festival begins Thursday, Sept. 17, and runs through Monday, Sept. 21.

Peter Lord, director of the Island Astronomy Institute on MDI, said Friday that festival organizers expect to be busy during the event, which they plan to do annually. Individual festival programs, some of which cost money and require advance registration, include telescope-aided stargazing events in the park, art shows, panel discussions, planetarium presentations, and owl-related exhibits, to name a few.

Peary-MacMillan Artic Museum in Brunswick, Maine

Bowdoin College is host of the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum in Brunswick, Maine. Robert Peary and Donald MacMillan were graduates of Bowdoin College and they made the trip to the North Pole about 100 years ago. The museum is located in Hubbard Hall, Bowdoin College.

Sebago to Sea Trail (Maine Hiking Trail)

Efforts are underway to establish a walking and hiking trail from Sebago Lake to the coast of Maine. The group heading the effort is called the Sebago to the Sea Coalition. Some of the trail is already established - such as the 6-mile long Mountain Division Trail from Standish to Windham. The total trail will be 28.5 miles long when completed; 10 miles remain to be identified. The trail will be a connection between two of Maine's' biggest bodies of water - Sebago Lake and Casco Bay. The trail would start at Sebago Lake and end in Falmouth.
