If you are looking for a " . . . snapshot of life in 19th century rural Maine . . ." then a visit to the museum in Monmouth will provide that to you. The museum, which opened in 1970, has a collection of artifacts from the early 1800s to 1950. There are over eight buildings in the Monmouth Museum including a corn crib, cobbler shop, blacksmith shop, carriage house, gift shop, country store, and stencil shop.
